CLOS D'ALBIZZI / CASSIS / FRANCE
The history of the French vineyard Clos d’Albizzi begins, perhaps surprisingly, in 14th century Florence.
After a fallout with the powerful Medici family, Antonio Albizzi and his family saw no other option than to leave Tuscany.
They decided to put as much distance between themselves and the Medici family as possible, and soon embarked on a ship that would take them to America. After only a short while onboard, the ship ran aground, just outside of Cassis.
The family decided to stay and since 1523, Cassis has been their home.
For generations, the Albizzi family has grown wine in Cassis, in clay-limestone and marly soil, close to Mont Gibaou. They own 14 hectares, all of which are organically grown. This translates into approximately 60,000 bottles of wine per year.
Today Marie-Laure Dumon and her father, François Dumon, direct descendants of the shipwrecked Florentine family, are in charge of the vineyard.
For them, the enotourism is equally important as people buying and drinking the wine – visitors to the vineyard also learn about the greater family history and the interesting culture of wine.
In Cassis, wine is not only a drink but a way of life.
