Palazzo Confalone
Category: Hotels
Location: Ravello, Italy
The reason that Ravello has such a strategic location, 350 metres above sea level, is that it was founded as a shelter against the barbarian invasions that marked the end of the Western Roman Empire.
For centuries, it was a producer of dyed wool, making it a key part of the local fashion history while also making it an important trading power in the Mediterranean.
Visiting Ravello today, it’s long and rich history is visible in many ways. One obvious aspect is the town’s many great mansions turned into hotels, and often with spectacular views of the sea below. The most personal choice among Ravello’s many grand hotels is Palazzo Confalone.
Its early history is since long forgotten, as archives have been lost, but it was probably built sometime during the 13th or 14th century. The noble family that built it was originally from Scala, the oldest town on the Amalfi coast and only separated from Ravello by the Dragon Valley.
The prestigious Confalone family moved to Ravello in the late 14th century and has been an integral part of the town’s history ever since. For centuries, they have cared for this palazzo.
When you first arrive, note the marble coat of arms with the rampant lion on the round arch of the entrance door that welcomes visitors. As you continue inside you will reach an atrium, framed by arches supported by marble columns, and with a sumptuous staircase leading visitors further inside the house.
Even during hot days, the interior of the palazzo is cool, making it the perfect place to relax with a book.
Many who stay here come specifically to enjoy the garden, with a belvedere overlooking the Amalfi Coast, bordered by octagonal columns.
Both lunch and dinner are served here, and if you don’t fancy spending the night, you can just as easily just come here for a meal or a drink.
Make sure to book a room in the original building. The newer addition – called Villa Confalone – is also nice, but the best rooms with the most traditional interiors are found in the older building.
As Palazzo Confalone has one of the best positions (and thus views) of all hotels in Ravello, make sure to select a room with views, preferably even its own terrace.
