Nomad

Location: Mykonos, Greece

”When our guests first arrive, they usually have a long list of things they want to do and see in Mykonos – they have dinner reservations made in advance and parties to go to. But once they see the hotel, they tend to cancel everything. They check in, which means checking out from the outside world,” the woman who shows us around NOMAD Hotel, a short ten minutes-drive from Chora, capital of the island, explains to us.

NOMAD is in the Kalafati region of the island, generally not as exploited as many other parts of Mykonos. With only 14 rooms, the hotel is a calm and secluded retreat, where you won’t be disturbed by anyone or anything.

But thanks to the small size of the island, many restaurants, bars, and nightclubs are within easy reach, and the staff is happy to help with recommendations and reservations.

Every room is generously sized, which means that it truly will feel like a home away from home. There are outdoor spaces to have breakfast and dinner, sofas to recline in and showers both inside and outside.

The hotel is planned around the guests’ convenience – the idea is that everything you need, you will find within the space of your room.

Breakfast can be had on the ground floor by the main pool, at the restaurant. However, with no extra cost, breakfast can also be served by your own private pool – you simply decide what you want off the menu, and it is swiftly brought to you.

The same goes for all other meals of the day, so some guests almost never even leave their own room. The restaurant is seemingly always open, so if you fancy a snack or a meal, you just order, regardless of what time it is.

Fresh fruit and smaller snacks are brought to you, and after dinner, your room is prepared for the evening, which includes traditional soothing oils for your feet and face, helping you to relax (after a busy day of lounging by the pool, or swimming in the ocean a few minutes away by foot).

An extra plus is the vegan lunch and dinner menu, small but varied.

The ambience of NOMAD – just 200 metres from Kalo Livadi, one of the most beautiful beaches of the Aegean Sea – can best be summarised as quiet and slow luxury.

Or as NOMAD state on its website, it’s a “private place designed for the discerning travellers with a nomad heart”. (The only drawback is the unfortunate design – shapeless black sacks combined with large metal necklaces – of the staff uniform.)

All building materials are natural and in earthy hues; the pools are all made from handcrafted stone, and the wash basins are from Tripoli and Tinos.

A small detail is the design of the taps on every sink; made from Greek marble, they resemble the communal basins in the towns of Ancient Greece, where people would collect their water.

The hotel is part of The Bohemians, a hotel group defined by slow luxury; using natural and local materials, respecting traditions and being as sustainable as possible, in every aspect.

For those with a tendency for restlessness, there is a small outdoor gym, and the possibility to do a yoga session or sign up for a massage treatment.
