Tuba Club - Cabanons & Restaurant
Category: Food & Wine
Location: Marseille, France
The unpretentious Tuba Restaurant lies at what appears to be the end of the world, or at least, on the last stretch of Europe before the Mediterranean Sea.
The unassuming building is easy to miss from the road; its entrance facing the waterfront a few kilometres east of Marseille, along an anonymous and slightly depressing road.
The easy-going attitude of the restaurant and hotel, decorated in a contemporary version of Mediterranean Art Déco, translates to the menu; food is locally sourced and prepared with only a few, key ingredients.
Service is slow but friendly – Tuba is not a place for those in a rush, but for those who like to sit down, relax and take their time.
Weather allowing, the terrace is the best place to eat, facing the water and cliffs.
Below the terrace are also a number of tables, and for those who want to go swimming either before or after the meal, there is a small ladder making it easy to get both in and out of the water.
The food is a mix of Mediterranean flavours: Sicilian sweets, Marseille grills, Provençal marinades, Greek, Nice or Roman salads, and local Corsican products.
As much as possible is locally sourced.
Eating at Tuba is an informal experience – sharing is not only welcome, but encouraged.
Lunch is the perfect meal at Tuba, a light meal to enjoy in the sunshine, together with some sparkling water. Dinner comes with a sunset.
If you want to indulge, the best advice is to get a room to go with your dinner, as the location is a bit remote and travelling back to Marseille would spoil the mood.
That way, you can not only end your evening at Tuba, but also begin your next day here, enjoying the cool blue sea and a subsequent coffee with your Mediterranean breakfast.
